McCullough added that by reducing overall disease severity with Omicron, the data may not provide an accurate understanding of COVID deaths.
“CDC death rates should be interpreted with caution because they are not judged to be dying from COVID.
They can actually die with COVID.”
The CDC website currently estimates that only 10% of deaths from COVID-19 have COVID-19 as the cause of death.
Therefore, there may be cases counted as mortality from COVID even if COVID was not the main cause of death.
McCullough gave the example that a person can be admitted to the hospital for a heart attack and test positive for COVID from having the disease 6 months ago.
That could mean that, for some deaths, "whether they're vaccinated or not is relatively irrelevant," McCullough said.
