A relaxing and recharging time in the forest cabin with my dog really calming my life. Just the two of us enjoying the sounds of nature and winter paradise. I'll cook the moose meat on the fire with water from the frozen lake. Living in the extreme cold conditions requires some advanced skills. It is difficult to light a fire, to cook a food, to get some water in such conditions. But this is not a problem for a real survivalist. I finish milling timbers from trees I cut down around the cabin and continue building the timber frame structure of the outdoor kitchen. The frames are heavy so I use the ATV anchored to the cabin logs and a maple tree to winch the walls into place. The forest kitchen is over 11 feet high so it's challenging to get the walls up and roof boards installed alone, but I have a system in place now so it's just another day or two to finish the frame and then I can start finishing the walls and order metal for the roof. Moose and beaver are very active around the cabin right now - calf moose and baby birds and other wildlife are regular visitors. On a hot day, my daughter Emily and I go for a short paddle in the canoe to catch a couple of small northern pike for dinner. The weather was incredible, warm and sunny one day with deer coming out to dine on the acorns exposed by the melting snow, but the next day, rain ice pellets fell all night long before changing to snow the following day. It was not the worst ice storm I've witnessed, not like the ice storm of several years ago that shut the northeast down for a few days, but it did some damage.

After digging out from a winter storm (that wasn't as bad as predicted in my location), I continue weatherproofing my off grid log cabin by adding door locks and trim to the porch door and the breezeway door. I insulate the ceiling and start installing charred 1" pine rough lumber, which immediately traps more of the heat from the woodstove and makes the cabin much more efficient than my last cabin. As I'm sure you've noticed over the years, I really like chaga and drink it every day for the taste but mainly for the health benefits. Now that the birch trees are dormant for the season, it's harvest time and it's back in stock on my website.
