Throughout his political career, Pierre Poilievre has taken aim at many of the Liberal government’s policies, including the decision to import oil instead of harvesting Canada’s immense natural resources

Now, as leader of the Conservative Party, the prime ministerial hopeful has vowed to make things right if elected.

“Right now, we lose wages because we import 130,000 barrels of overseas oil, mostly from dictators, every single day, even though we have the third largest supply right here in Canada,” Poilievre said during a campaign speech.

He went on to accuse the Trudeau Liberals of preferring “dirty dictator oil” over responsible, clean Canadian energy.

Poilievre promised that if elected, Conservatives would “repeal this government’s anti-energy laws and replace them with a law that protects our environment, consults First Nations, and gets things built.”

In order to achieve their goals, Poilievre explained, a Conservative government would “greenlight Newfoundland and Labrador’s planned increase in oil production,” thus allowing Canada to “fully replace every single barrel of oil we’re importing abroad.”

“Within five years,” he concluded, “we will set the goal to end dictator oil in Canada altogether.”

Poilievre has long criticized Trudeau for supporting foreign oil while nixing Canadian projects. “Every time he kills a Canadian energy project, foreign dictators like Putin do a victory dance, because they get to dominate the world market,” he quipped in a May speech.

He has also expressed interest in repealing Bill C-69 and other anti-energy laws.
