Germany-based company BioNTech is known for its work on mRNA technology.
Moderna has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Pfizer over its Covid-19 vaccine, the company said in a statement.
Moderna claims Pfizer/BionTech copied mRNA technology the company had developed years before the pandemic.
Pfizer's stock fell 1.4%, while BioNTech fell 2% before the session opened.
The suit, which seeks unspecified damages, was filed in the District Court of Massachusetts and the District Court of Dusseldorf.
Moderna was founded just over a decade ago and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She became known for her innovative research in the development of mRNA technology.
